Glucose malabsorption testing

My experience undergoing Glucose malabsorption testing

The third test in my series of hydrogen breath tests to create as clear a SIBO profile, was glucose. The glucose malabsorption testing I did came from the same company, sibo test, as the lactulose malabsorption testing I undertook and preparation for both tests was the same, so to read about that, check out my lactulose test post.

I was only required to do the glucose test, because my results from the lactulose test were inconclusive. To work out your SIBO profile, you may need to do 1, 2 or 3 tests, depending on the results. After following the same preparation protocol, test day had arrived. I emptied my bowels and the breathing began.

Test

I prepared the glucose mixture, which although I was under 75kg in weight, by the time I measured out 6 tablespoons of glucose the entirety of the sachet contents were used. Perhaps they were meaning a US tablespoon of 15ml rather than an Australian tablespoon of 20ml. However I thought it wouldn't be of any harm to have a little more than prescribed, so I mixed it with water until dissolved. It was like drinking straight liquid sugar, extremely sweet but not unpleasant. After completing my baseline breath, I consumed the substrate and commenced timing. By now I had the hang of it and the next 3 hours flew by as I collected samples, wrote out vial labels, took stomach pics and played on the computer.

Results

Once complete, I packaged up the vials and returned the test kit to The Biome Clinic. Again, I waited in anticipation for the results to become available in the patient portal. And drum roll please... they were negative. I don't have a glucose malabsorption issue. Interestingly though, I again had a high baseline methane level, as was recorded in my fructose malabsorption test, which indicates to me this is something going on in my body, rather than unsatisfactory patient preparation for the test. Now that I had all three test results, I was ready for my first appointment with Anne, to see what she could make of my digestive history and test results. My continuing digestive journey in 2020 was in full swing.
